about the artist
Thai-born and Los Angeles native artist Ann McFerran approaches her work with a belief in the emotive power of color, various methods of mark making, and thickly applied layers of paint. Her work is characterized by gestural boldness, and chromatic richness that exude vital qualities of energy and dynamism derived from her internal state or surroundings. The subjects of her paintings fluctuate from subtle references of figuration and/or narrative—to eschewing them altogether.
She works in a range of painting materials, including oil, acrylic, spray paint, ink, molding paste and found items that are collaged and seamlessly integrated onto canvas. Despite her large range, consistent throughout her work is the calculated balancing of composition, color, and mark making—a sense of control within a fabricated chaos.
Early Life || Born in Bangkok, Thailand, Ann immigrated with her single mother to the states when she was seven years old as Jitsupa Tangtrongchitr. Her step father helped Ann and her mother move to the suburbs of Tracy, CA where she made money painting murals for their local neighborhood. Ann grew up in a household with walls adorned with murals of elaborate nature scenes, animals, and vintage cars, spaces that were integrated and enhanced by creativity which informs her proclivity towards making work tailored to tasteful color combos and enhancing people's spaces.
Education || Ann has a B.S. in psychobiology and studied Fine Art at UCLA. In addition to her studies she pursued independent studies regarding politics, leadership, and philosophical principles at Princeton University as well as the Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui in order to understand the philosophical system of harmonizing the environment to improve well being. She currently works and lives in Los Angeles.
Art || Ann's work can be described an exploration of the fine line between chaos and control – a capturing of chaotic energy and controlling it - the color and the movement evoked is a byproduct of the control she imposes in contrast to the organic movement of paint. She believes in creating work to accentuate living and social spaces - either by brightening up the mood, or for bringing life and color into any room.
"I believe that the inspiration for creating art is as rich in variation as the fluid and unique experiences in our lives, Each inspiration is drawn from a full spectrum of color. Nothing is ever fully planned.
Painting is a continuous dialogue between self, canvas, and space. Each piece is a story wrought from memory and feeling - a process of self-discovery that I undertake every time I pick up the brush,"
